'G Force' Scratch Repair Polishing System

This test was carried out with a machine current in 1999. Since then we have continually developed, improved and updated our scratch polishing system which has evolved into the current G Force Scratch Polishing System.

The Client submitted ten, 12-inch by 12-inch by ¼-inch thick pieces of laminated glass identified as 2B, 2C, 3A, 3B, 4B, 4C, 5A, 5B, 5C and 11A. The samples were submitted on November 11, 1999 (SGS USTC Tracking No. 30774).

Procedure

Each piece of glass was tested "as received" for Optical Deviation and Visibility Distortion as outlined in Section 15 of the referenced ANSI/SAE Z26.1-1990 Standard.

One surface of each piece of glass was then "scratched" using 400 grit wet or dry silicon carbide sandpaper and a 1lb steel ball. A 1-inch wide strip of sandpaper was placed around the steel ball and a 4-inch long section of glass "scratched" by moving the steel ball back and forth for ten strokes. Each piece of glass was then tested for Optical Deviation and Visibility Distortion. The "scratched" area was then repaired by the Client using the Glas-Weld Scratch Removal System with 2-inch and 4-inch diameter circular discs. Samples 2B, 2C, 4B, 4C and 5A were repaired using the 4-inch disc; samples 3A, 3B, 5B, 5C and 11A were repaired using the 2-inch disc. The "repaired" glass was then re-tested for Optical Deviation and Visibility Distortion.

Results
Test Condition of Glass Observation
Optical Deviation "As Received" No shift of the secondary image beyond the point of tangency with the inside edge of the circle was observed in any of the ten submitted samples. No defects in the glass were observed.
Optical Deviation "Scratched" Light being scattered by the scratched area beyond the point of tangency with the inside edge of the circle on all ten of the 'scratched' samples.
Optical Deviation "Repaired" No shift of the secondary image beyond the point of tangency withthe inside edge of the circle was observed. No scattering of light was observed. Each of the ten pieces of glass were visually returned to their "as received" condition.
Visibility Distortion "As Received" No light and dark patches were observed in any of the ten submitted samples up to a distance of 25 inches from the screen.
Visibility Distortion "Scratched" The scratched areas were visible on the screen up to a distance of 25 inches on all ten samples.
Visibility Distortion "Repaired" No light and dark patches or scratches were observed in any of the ten samples up to a distance of 25 inches from the screen. Each of the ten pieces of glass were visually returned to their "as received" condition.
